WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELECTRICAL CERTIFICATION?
You must ensure that you receive and keep the documents for all completed electrical installation work and periodic inspections and tests. All certificates and reports must include inspection schedules and test results.
The type of certification or report you receive depends on the extent and type of electrical installation work, or inspection and testing, that you have performed.
Electrical Certification For New Installations, Modifications Or Additions
The test certificates of electrical installation (EIC) and the certificates of small works of electrical installation (MEIWC) provide you, as person responsible for the safety of an electrical installation, a declaration according to which the new installation, or the modification or adding, is safe to use at this time it has been put into service.
Maintaining these certificates also provides a basis for further inspection and testing, as they can help save on expensive exploration work that might otherwise be required in the future. In addition, in the event of a claim that injuries or a fire were caused by an electrical installation, the certificates are documentary evidence which makes it possible to demonstrate that the installation has been installed according to a satisfactory level of safety.
The EIC will indicate whether the electrical work carried out is:
1:New - where the entire installation has been installed as new, if complete rewiring has been performed.
2:Addition - applies if an existing installation has been modified by adding one or more new circuits.
3:Alteration - applies when one or more existing circuits have been modified or extended (for example to add a socket), or elements such as a consumption unit (fuse box) and switching equipment have been replaced.
An EIC must be issued for all new electrical installations. It may also be necessary for modification or addition to the installation - depending on whether a new circuit has been installed or not. When a modification or addition is made but does not include a new circuit, a MEIWC or an EIC can be used.
You should always use a registered contractor who will issue the correct certification for the work they undertake. To find a NICEIC registered contractor, use our Find Contractors search function. For more info click here
