Portable Appliance Testing Frequency

There are no strict and rapid rules established by the Health and Safety Executive on the frequency of PAT tests. However, it is suggested in the Memorandum on the Electricity at Work Regulations that "regular inspection of equipment is an essential part of any preventive maintenance program". The frequency of PAT tests for each device and each situation requires an individual assessment and judgment of the person with the equipment under his control, in collaboration with the competent tested person, also depending on the following factors:
1- Types of equipment (portable and portable devices such as a hair dryer / drill are more likely to be damaged than stationary ones such as a computer).
2- Whether or not users use the equipment competently and will report damage as it occurs to avoid danger
3- The frequency of PAT tests required will also depend on the frequency of use of the device and the likelihood of abuse
4- Age of equipment
5- If moved regularly and by what means
6- Environment
some areas will be more dangerous than others; equipment used on a construction site, for example, is likely to be subject to more unfavorable conditions than an office and the frequency of PAT tests should be increased.
7- Results of previous tests
8- Manufacturers / equipment construction recommendations
9- The effects of any repair or modification of the equipment

When deciding on the frequency of PAT tests required, it is also important to take into account whether the equipment will remain safe in its expected conditions until the next test date. It is imperative to take advice from the PAT test engineer.
It should also be borne in mind that new equipment should be purchased from reliable sources and that used equipment should not be used unless PAT testing is completed to ensure its safety first. Always perform a visual test at a minimum before authorizing the use of a new device.

The key thing to consider when deciding on the appropriate frequency of PAT test periods is the need to demonstrate your company's commitment to health and safety policy. More info
