What is the PAT test?
The portable appliance test or PAT test is the process of verifying the safety of electrical devices through a series of visual inspections and electronic tests.
Why should I have my devices tested?
The best way to keep your appliance safe is to have them do a PAT test. It is a good way for owners to ensure that they meet their legal obligations to maintain high standards of electrical safety in their rented property.
What are portable device tests?
To establish the safety and suitability of your electrical appliances, the competent person will carry out a visual inspection of the appliance, its plug and its wire. For class I equipment [1], they will also inject test signals into the cable and the appliance to guarantee their integrity.
Who should do the work?
Electrical work should only be carried out by persons with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to avoid danger to themselves and to others.
Many licensed electricians will test portable appliances. You can find a licensed electrician here.
What will I receive?
Upon completion of the inspection and testing of the portable appliance, you should receive a report detailing at a minimum the following:
1: An inventory containing each type of device, name, location and description
2: A complete set of test results for each appliance tested
3: A complete list of failed items with an explanation for their failure
4: A pass or fail label visible on each appliance detailing the date of inspection, the next test to be performed and the signature of the inspector.
If you are not technically aware, the contractor / competent person who carried out the inspection and testing should be happy to discuss your report with you and inform you of any other required actions. Home
