What is the Electrical PAT test?
Sometimes we get so caught up in the technical details of the trades that we forget the basics.
This article aims to answer some frequently asked questions about Electrical PAT tests.
If you are a consumer, an apprentice or a competent person, these are the things you should know ...
What do PAT tests mean?
Testing of portable appliances.
What is the PAT test?
It is the term used to describe the examination of electrical Pat appliances and equipment to ensure that they are safe to use.
How do I do the PAT test?
Only a trained expert (competent person) should perform a complete PAT test, but a brief user verification can be useful for maintaining your appliances.
Electrical safety defects can often be found with a visual exam, so this is still important.
Some defects can only be found through tests.
However, both processes are important, since tests sometimes do not solve problems, just as a visual exam will not.
What does the PAT test need?
The Electricity at Work Regulations of 1989 require that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury be kept in safe condition.
The regulations do not tell you what should be done, by whom or how often. It is not, therefore, a legal requirement.
It is strongly recommended that Electrical PAT test devices in the workplace ensure that they are not a risk to employees or customers.
Injuries caused by defective electrical equipment will ultimately be the fault of the business and could lead to prosecution.
Who can try PAT?
A competent person is required to carry out the test.
A competent staff member (with sufficient knowledge and training) can perform visual inspections.
For the combined inspection and test, a professional electrician or a domestic electrician will be required. Home
