What Are The “Electrical Classes” In PAT Tests?
Electrical appliances are mainly classified in class 1, 2 or 3, class 1 being the most dangerous and class 3 the least dangerous.
The class of a device determines whether it should be PAT tested and to what extent. Class 1 devices require a full PAT test, Class 2 devices need a PAT isolation test, and Class 3 devices do not need to be PAT tested at all.
Class 1 Devices
This type of electrical equipment has only basic insulation and rests on earth for its protection.
Class 2 Devices
This type of electrical equipment has additional insulation and therefore does not depend on an earth for protection, which makes it safer.
Class 3 Devices
Class 3 devices are low voltage devices and are the safest class of electrical devices. Their charging cables may require a PAT test.
